Sojourner Symphony

This first piece of resin furniture designed by Matt Flynn is the most complex of his designs: a symphony of curves, looping, doubling back, blending with each other, only to gracefully curl off again on new trajectories. The design comes from the heart of a sojourner, traversing the world, visiting new cultures, interacting with people along the way, at times passing by again, at other times, venturing off along a different path. In some ways, the design is a self-portrait, for “not all who wander are lost” (J.R.R. Tolkein, The Fellowship of the Ring). A softened triangular cross-section races a three-pointed path in plan, doubling each peak and valley, adding a singular central loop for a beautiful compilation of the numbers seven, three, two, and one. Yet the design is not a product of cold, mathematical algorithms; the form is personally and uniquely sculpted; each form inhabits its spatial curvature because of the author’s aesthetic taste. Intended to support a glass table top, the project awaits painting.
